Abstract

Early childhood’s low interest in reading presents a fundamental challenge in establishing a strong foundation for future literacy. Advances in digital technology offer opportunities to create innovative learning media, including story-based educational games that integrate narrative, visual, and interactive elements. This study aims to describe the conceptual development of story-based educational games as interactive media with the potential to foster reading interest among young children. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach supported by a literature review of empirical and conceptual studies published between 2020 and 2025, the study synthesizes current insights on digital story-driven learning. The findings indicate that embedding narrative components in educational games can enhance children’s emotional engagement, strengthen comprehension of text meaning, and boost intrinsic motivation toward reading activities. Story-based games also align with principles of learning through play and story-centered instruction, both of which are considered effective for early childhood education. This article recommends the development of a prototype story-based educational game featuring local cultural content and child-friendly interactive features to support early literacy learning in early childhood education settings.
