Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of Indonesian language learning at the elementary level, as it forms the foundation for reading, writing, and speaking skills. However, conventional memorization-based instruction often limits students’ ability to understand word meanings contextually. In line with advancements in educational technology, the integration of interactive digital storytelling offers an innovative approach to enhancing vocabulary learning and student engagement. This study is a systematic literature review that examines 25 national and international scholarly sources published between 2009 and 2024 related to digital storytelling in language education. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify general patterns, media effectiveness, and influential pedagogical factors. The findings indicate that interactive digital storytelling consistently improves elementary students’ vocabulary acquisition. The integration of text, imagery, audio, and interactivity enhances semantic association, memory retention, and learning motivation. Beyond cognitive benefits, this medium also fosters emotional and social engagement through meaningful narrative experiences. Nevertheless, the success of its implementation is largely determined by pedagogical design, content quality, and the teacher’s role as a learning facilitator. Within the framework of Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum), interactive digital storytelling serves as an effective means to simultaneously develop digital and linguistic literacy. This review recommends collaboration among teachers, researchers, and media developers to design contextually relevant digital content aligned with the learning needs and cultural context of Indonesian elementary students.
