Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to reintroduce the traditional cultural values of the Sasak people to children in Pohgading Village, East Lombok, through a creative and child-friendly approach. The initiative responded to the declining interest of younger generations in local culture due to the strong influence of global popular culture. The program was implemented in three main stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The planning stage involved observation and the development of a curriculum tailored to the participants’ needs and skill levels. The implementation stage delivered Sasak cultural content through lectures supported by animated media, alongside a workshop on coloring Sasak wayang characters. Participants were guided in basic coloring techniques, harmonious color selection, and the interpretation of local cultural symbols. Evaluation was conducted qualitatively through assessment of participants’ works, observation of engagement, and interactive Q&A sessions. The results indicated a positive response, with participants demonstrating increased understanding and appreciation of traditional arts. The integration of visual media and participatory art practices proved effective in fostering cultural awareness in an enjoyable manner. This approach highlights the potential of cultural preservation through contextual and adaptive non-formal education suited to the characteristics of younger generations.
