Abstract

Character development among students constitutes a central focus in 21st-century education. Performing arts, particularly theatre, serve as an effective medium for fostering such development. This community engagement initiative was designed to provide acting training for members of the SMA Negeri 6 Mataram Student Theatre Club as a means of enhancing character formation, with particular emphasis on discipline, collaboration, self-confidence, and responsibility. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, engaging students actively throughout the entire training process. Training activities encompassed body movement, voice modulation, emotional expression, and improvisation, employing techniques such as mirror exercises, concentration drills, and group-based tasks. Conducted over the span of one month, the program yielded notable improvements in participants’ acting skills as well as their attitudes and daily behaviours. Initial challenges, including shyness, low self-confidence, and passivity, were effectively addressed through motivational strategies, role-playing methods, and the cultivation of an inclusive and supportive learning environment. The findings indicate that acting training constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy for strengthening students’ character within the school context.
