Muslim-friendly tourism is emerging as a fast-growing segment within the global tourism industry, driven by the increasing number of Muslim travelers seeking services, facilities, and experiences that align with Sharia principles. This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of scholarly works discussing concepts, implementation practices, challenges, and development strategies of Muslim-friendly tourism, with attention to both Indonesia and international destinations. Twenty peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2025 were systematically identified, selected, and critically examined using qualitative descriptive content analysis, which classified findings into four core themes. The review reveals that Muslim-friendly tourism is characterized by adherence to Sharia values, provision of inclusive and comfortable travel experiences, establishment of halal service standards, and fulfillment of both physical and spiritual needs of Muslim tourists. Key implementation practices include halal accommodations, certified halal food, accessible prayer facilities, safe transport, Sharia-compliant recreational activities, and reliable information services. Nevertheless, this sector still faces significant barriers such as limited infrastructure readiness, insufficient human resource competence, varying service quality standards, and differing expectations between domestic and international travelers. To address these challenges, recommended strategies include strengthening human resource capacity, encouraging collaboration among stakeholders, optimizing digital platforms, promoting destinations globally, and ensuring standardized halal certification. Overall, the findings highlight that Muslim-friendly tourism is interdisciplinary, requiring the integration of management, cultural understanding, economic planning, and technological support to build destinations that are competitive, sustainable, and responsive to global market demands, while also serving as valuable guidance for policymakers and industry practitioners.
