Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of an extracurricular physical training programme in improving the physical fitness of students at MTs Ijo Balit. The research focuses on five key components of fitness: speed, abdominal muscle strength, leg power, agility, and endurance. A quantitative descriptive method was employed, involving 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test (TKJI) administered before and after the six-week training programme, conducted twice a week. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages and comparisons across ability categories. The findings indicate a significant improvement across all fitness indicators. Speed improved through a shift from the ‘fair’ to ‘good’ categories, while abdominal strength and leg power increased consistently due to adaptations from core and plyometric exercises. Agility and endurance also showed substantial improvement, reflected in the rise of students achieving the ‘very good’ category and the sharp decline in the lower categories. These results demonstrate that a structured and progressive training programme provides an effective stimulus for enhancing students’ physical performance. In conclusion, the extracurricular physical training programme proved effective in comprehensively improving students’ physical fitness and can serve as a sustainable strategy for fitness development within the school environment.
