Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the Perak Api ritual of the Sasak community in Lombok as a symbolic representation of the human life cycle. While often perceived merely as a naming ceremony, this study reveals its deeper semiotic and anthropological meanings. Using qualitative methods with semiotic theory (Peirce, Barthes), symbolic anthropology (Geertz, Bell, Douglas, Hoskins), and rites of passage (van Gennep, Turner), the research identifies three symbolic dimensions: the origin of life (sirih, pinang, egg, water, placenta), the journey and conflict of life (umbilical cord, smoke, thread, rice, name), and the resolution of struggle (extinguishing fire as control of desire). The findings show that the ritual serves as both cosmological orientation for the child and moral-spiritual reminder for the community, while also functioning as cultural heritage with universal values beyond its local context.
